On Thursday, Abhishek Bachchan posted on his Instagram a new film poster that shows his father, the iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan, and himself.

What did Abhishek Bachchan say about Sholay’s re-release?

In the caption, Abhishek wrote, “The greatest story never told! Can’t wait to witness Sholay in all its glory on the big screen. I have NEVER seen Sholay on the big screen, only on TV and VHS/DVD. It’s been a lifelong dream.” His post clearly shows that this occasion is very special for him.

What are the changes in the Sholay re-release?

This new version of Sholay, considered one of the greatest films of Indian cinema, restores the original climax and two deleted scenes. According to reports by the newswire, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reviewed the film on November 24, 2025, and granted it a “U” certificate without any cuts. The new version has a running time of 209.05 minutes, which is approximately 3 hours, 29 minutes, and 5 seconds. The original film was 190 minutes long. The film has been restored in 4K, and its original 70mm aspect ratio (2.2:1) has been maintained. Furthermore, the sound has also been remastered from the old audio negative and magnetic tracks.

Sholay re-release controversy

However, the re-release has also stirred up discussions. One big line in the trailer was altered, changing “James Bond” to “Tatya Tope.” A lot of fans were not happy with this modification. Javed Akhtar, the writer of the film’s dialogues, was also against the change and argued that the original character of classic films should not be altered. Nonetheless, the audience’s excitement to watch the movie again in theaters was still there. Sholay: The Final Cut comes out in cinemas this Friday, December 12, 2025.
