Joe Alwyn is briefly looking back on his breakup from Taylor Swift.
During an interview with The Guardian published Sunday, the Brutalist actor was asked about his previous longtime relationship with Swift, who he dated for over six years.
When asked if he ever feared whether his relationship with Swift would overshadow his career, Alwyn said, “I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control. And, right from the beginning, tried to focus on the things that are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course. So noise outside of that, I think I’ve done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it.”
He continued, “If you don’t, and if you let all of that other stuff in, and if it starts to affect you and your behavior, you’re living from the outside in. And then you’re pretty fucked.”
“I have great family and friends and real things in my life; those are the things that kept me tethered to the ground,” Alwyn emphasized. “So I don’t know how else to say it, it’s… just in a different room.”
When the publication asked whether Alwyn “must just want to move on” from his previous relationship, Alwyn noted that he has but perhaps the public hasn’t. “That’s something for other people to do,” he says. “We’re talking about something that’s a while ago now in my life. So that’s for other people. That’s what I feel.”
During their relationship, Swift had surprised fans when she revealed that the mysterious songwriter listed on her album folklore‘s credits as William Bowery was in fact Alwyn. Alwyn helped write a couple of songs for folklore including “exile” and “betty,” as well as writing credits on its follow-up Evermore.
Folklore won three Grammys, resulting in Alwyn also receiving Grammys. “Lockdown was a whole host of surprises and that was pretty special,” Alwyn said. “That was not something I would have foreseen.” He also quipped that after winning a Grammy, he’ll just “breeze through” winning an Emmy, Oscar and Tony to make EGOT status.
Alwyn had first broken his silence about their breakup over a year after the relationship ended. While sitting down with The Sunday Times Style Magazine, Alwyn told the publication, “I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.”
After it was reported that the two had parted ways, the actor said a “very real” experience was thrown into the “very unreal space” of tabloids, social media and the press, where it was “dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition.”
“And the truth is, to that last point, there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said,” he explained. “I have made my peace with that.”
Known for being private about his personal life, Alwyn said that he will continue to keep private details to himself: “It was never something to commodify, and I see no reason to change that now. Look, this is also a little over a year ago now, and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life — professionally and personally. I feel really good.”
Swift has since been in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, notably attending his games and even joining him for the celebration on the field after his team’s Super Bowl win last year. After winning for video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, Swift publicly thanked Kelce for his support. Swift and Kelce also surprised everyone when Kelce made an appearance during Swift’s Eras Tour in London. While performing at London’s Wembley Stadium, Swift brought her boyfriend out during a performance of “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”
When discussing their relationship, Kelce said that despite there being a media frenzy surrounding Swift at all times, he’s “proud” of his relationship and can maintain privacy while still being open about the fact that they’re a couple: “You want to keep things private, but at the same time I’m not here to hide anything. That’s my girl, you know what I mean? That’s my lady. It’s like, I’m proud of that. So I’m not sitting here trying to juggle, like, how can I keep this under wraps? You just don’t want to let everybody into your personal life and be able to comment on it, knowing that everything she does is getting a headline.”
