Christina Aguilera resurrected her signature Y2K style with a statement bandanna on a boat ride in Portofino, Italy, over the weekend, in pictures obtained by Page Six.
The singer, 45, paired her bedazzled blue-and-white headscarf with an all-white ensemble — down to her flip flops — while out on the water with fiancé Matthew Rutler on Saturday.
The Grammy winner completed her look with a pair of sunglasses.
Aguilera, who was photographed packing on the PDA with her partner on the watercraft, frequently sported head scarves in the early aughts.
At the time, the songwriter was promoting her 2002 “Stripped” album, an era during which she rocked black extensions in her platinum blond locks.
Aguilera recently reflected on this period while chatting with Harper’s Bazaar, telling the magazine she didn’t want to feel “too boxed in or to play it safe” in her career.
“Once I got the creative freedom to make the album, I wanted to express myself wholeheartedly and authentically,” she explained in April. “I wanted to have fun.”
The “Genie in a Bottle” hitmaker noted that the “mix-and-match” hairstyle after being “blond [her] whole life up until then” was “kind of an introduction to dyeing [her] hair full black,” which she did in 2003.
“It was a little naughty, a little nice, and we had fun with that,” she gushed. “The content and material of ‘Stripped’ were versatile and had different elements of the light and the dark, so it was natural for the hair to be in alignment with the music.”
One of the actress’ hairstylists Priscilla Valles shared with Refinery29 in 2019 that Peter Savic was the “creative mind behind her black extensions.”
He divulged, “I do remember that there was a problem with them at one point. Christina washed her hair and the black began to bleed onto the blond, and turned it gray. This was just before a performance, too.”
Calling this “a bit of a panic moment,” he clarified, “If something doesn’t really work and looks a little messed up, Christina still likes it.”
In 2018, Aguilera reflected to Cosmopolitan about how edgy style during her “Stripped” era, specifically her “Dirrty” music video look, being “extremely controversial.”
The “Burlesque” star, who famously wore a headscarf as a top at the 2002 MTV VMAs, speculated that her daring looks of that time “would be nothing now.”
She added, “I hope I paved the way and helped set the ground rules that women can be any version of themselves they wanna be … and proud of it.”
