Thirty years after the release of the hit 1996 local film Army Daze, the five ‘recruits’ have reunited.
Former actors Edward Yong, Ahamed Azad, Adrian Lim and Kevin Mark Verghese recently met up at fellow cast member Sheikh Haikel’s chicken rice restaurant Hai Ge Ji.
Edward had revealed their reunion in an Instagram post on Sept 20, where he wrote that the movie “feels like a lifetime ago” but seeing his co-stars again made it feel as though no time had passed.
“We haven’t been able to get together as frequently as we would have liked, but I am always grateful when we manage it. All of us have grown and developed so much, and it fills me with joy to see the families some of us have started, and the ventures that have grown and taken flight,” he said.
“Here’s to wishing everyone all the best and every blessing, and especially to Sheikh Haikel as he battles a monster.”
Earlier this month, Sheikh, who turns 51 in October, revealed he has stage four colon cancer and has been battling the disease for more than a year.
In the same post, Edward thanked Sheikh’s wife Anna Belle Francis “for the hospitality and for her unfailing support” of Sheikh, adding: “I look forward to catching up with everyone again, and I mean everyone, so stick around okay, Haikel, ’cause who’s going to bully me if you’re gone?”

Army Daze follows the journey of five 18-year-old men of different backgrounds as they enlist in National Service: Malcolm (played by Edward), Johari (Sheikh), Krishna (Ahamed), Ah Beng (Adrian) and Kenny (Kevin).
They are assigned to Hotel Company Platoon 4, where they go through the challenges being army recruits.
Based on Michael Chiang’s best-selling book of the same name, the film took in $1.6 million at the box office then.
