Hercule Poirot is here. Well, not quite yet – but a first look at him is.
The BBC and BritBox revealed first-look images of Edward Bluemel (My Lady Jane, Killing Eve, Sex Education, A Discovery of Witches) as a young Hercule Poirot in the upcoming six-part series Hercule from Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Ltd. on Friday. Check them out in the main image of this article and a shot from a bit more of a distance below.
The series, which has started filming in Liverpool, is described as “an intimate study of Hercule Poirot, the man, and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars.” Hercule will center around three of Christie’s early stories of the Belgian detective, while also introducing the famous sleuth to future friends and allies and, according to a synopsis, “one particular nemesis … .”
Previously unveiled to join Bluemel in the cast of the new series were Henry Ashton (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder), James D’Arcy (Oppenheimer, Constellations), Calvin Demba (Supacell, Life), Phil Dunning (Smoggie Queens, Am I Being Unreasonable?), Jack Gleeson (House of Guinness, In the Land of the Saints and Sinners), Tamsin Greig (Riot Women, Friday Night Dinner), James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, Run Away), Guy Remmers (The Buccaneers, Lessons), Rebecca Rittenhouse (His & Hers, Maggie) and Mawaan Rizwan (Juice, The Split Up).
Christie’s Poirot novels have sold more than 750 million copies. Hercule is produced by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, and Agatha Christie Ltd. for BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the U.K., as well as BritBox in North America in 2027.
Written by Benji Walters (Code of Silence, The Leopard, Obsession), the first two episodes are being directed by Jonny Campbell (Am I Being Unreasonable?, In The Flesh), with Chanya Button (Code of Silence, Doctor Who) and Alrick Riley (Bridgerton, How to Get Away with Murder) directing the middle two and final two episodes, respectively. Charlie Palmer (A Woman of Substance, Extraordinary) serves as series producer.
The executive producers are Walters and Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Ltd., Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Nick Lambon for the BBC and Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye for BritBox.
Fifth Season is handling global distribution for Hercule.
