Karol G, who is set to become the first Latina artist to headline Coachella this weekend, said she wants to make a notable impact, especially for the Latin community, with her performance.
The Colombian superstar told Playboy in a recent interview that she wanted the right opportunity to stand up for her community. Especially since the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Donald Trump has been widely criticized for its aggressive tactics towards the Hispanic community specifically.
“People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t,’” Karol G said of speaking out against ICE. “Why? Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away.’ You become bait, because some people want to show their power.”
Rather than saying the popular anti-ICE phrase “ICE Out” that many other celebrities, such as Bad Bunny, have also said in the past, the “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” singer admitted she wants to make a statement that will be even more meaningful.
“I have a huge stage, and that’s why I want to wait, and if someone was ever to do something to me, I want to stand firmly on my stage for my community,” Karol G said of her upcoming Coachella performance. “So that’s why I may have to be more careful, and wait for my turn, and ensure that, through that opportunity, I can talk and represent something more.”
“What impact does it really have to say ‘ICE Out’ versus something else that can have a real impact on my community?” she also asked.
“I don’t want to just say ‘ICE Out’ and have nothing come from it,” the “PROVENZA” artist continued. “I’m probably going to go a little harder than that. I just want to represent my community. But what I’m telling you is that, as a human being, I want that to mean more. I’m not saying that I’m not going to do it; what I’m saying is that I would do it and will do it with my soul. But I want to sit down and understand, in my head: Here’s what that meant.”
Following Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber’s headlining performances at Coachella on Friday and Saturday this year, Karol G is set to hit the main stage on Sunday night the next two weekends.
