Valerie Bertinelli’s favorite books include a childhood classic and a romantasy darling.
“This was such a challenge,” Bertinelli tells Page Six of picking just six books. “I have so many books that I love.”
The “One Day at a Time” star is a celebrated bestselling author in her own right with several novels — including her latest memoir “Getting Naked,” which shares a powerful message of self-acceptance and embracing your past.
“Writing it helped me get to where I am today,” she says.
See below for Bertinelli’s must-read book recommendations.
“Let’s just start with ‘Yertle the Turtle’ from Dr. Seuss. Scary and strange how timely it is in today’s age. May I suggest every parent read it to their child? And possibly taking the message for yourself as well. In a world full of Yertles, be a Mac.”
“A long time ago, I read Ken Follett’s ‘The Pillars of the Earth.’ I would love to reread it soon. An epic tale that takes place in 12th century England and the building of the finest Gothic cathedral. It’s got a love story, forbidden love, war between evil and good and brothers. I never wanted it to end.”
“‘Getting Naked’ is my favorite book that I’ve written. Writing it helped me get to where I am today. Stronger, eased of shame and self-loathing and in touch and proud of who I actually am. I’m hopeful that by reading it, I can help someone else get there too.”
“There is something about ‘Horse’ by Geraldine Brooks that I just can’t let go of. A beautiful and stunning book about the provenance of a painting of a legendary racehorse. It’s the best kind of historical fiction that weaves three different time periods together and how this painting makes its mark through all of them.”
“And after you’ve read ‘Horse’ read ‘Memorial Days’ by the same author. She was writing ‘Horse’ when she went through a devastating loss. It’s a gorgeous book of having to move through your life and your work while having to process such immense grief.”
“I’ll round out the list with ‘Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros because who doesn’t want to fly through the sky on a dragon while falling in love and fighting the bad guys.”
