Alien: Earth, Season One
Alien: Earth is a bold, deep dive into Ridley Scott’s iconic nightmare universe, only this time Noah Hawley is at the helm. Set in 2120, it depicts corporate dystopia, where megacompany rivalries and bizarre hybrid experiments run parallel to the inevitable outbreak of monsters. The show balances unnerving AI metaphors with grotesque horror. Sydney Chandler delivers a haunting turn as Wendy, a child’s mind in a synthetic body, while Timothy Olyphant is magnetic as a mentor with bleach-blonde hair. It’s gruesome and very watchable. Available to watch on Disney+/ Hulu / FX.
Butterfly, Season One
Butterfly is pure adrenaline. Based on the BOOM! Studios graphic novel, this Korean-set thriller follows David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), a former spy forced out of hiding when his daughter – a trained assassin – resurfaces under the wing of his ex-partner. What unfolds is part thriller, part family therapy session, delivered with gunfire, car chases, and rooftop knife fights. The South Korean backdrop adds flair, with cities including Daegu and Pohang stealing scenes, but the show does have a bit of an overreliance on explosions and gadgetry. Entertaining enough for a weekend binge, but not one you’d want to watch again and again. Streaming on Prime Video.
