Global superstar Celine Dion has revealed that she has panic buttons installed throughout her home so her sons can help her manage medical emergencies linked to her rare Stiff Person Syndrome.
The 57-year-old singer, diagnosed with the autoimmune and neurological disorder in 2022, explained that she worked closely with her teenage twins Eddy and Nelson to help them understand how to react when she experiences a “crisis” episode – when her body completely seizes up and she is unable to move or speak.
Celine Dion: “They know what to do – even if I can’t talk”
In an interview cited by HELLO! Magazine, Dion said she wanted her sons to feel empowered rather than frightened by her condition.
“We have panic buttons in the house, and they know how to put me on my side,” Dion shared. “The idea of telling them and showing them was not to frighten them – it’s for them to know I might need their help.”
The Canadian star explained that she and her sons rehearse what to do every few months, turning her health challenges into a practical family routine.
“They saw a crisis – we explained it, we played it frame by frame,” she told People. “When I make a sound, or when I don’t, they know what to do because I can’t produce a sound.”
Since the death of her husband René Angélil in 2016, Dion has been raising her three sons: René-Charles, 24, and 15-year-old twins Eddy and Nelson largely on her own. Her goal, she says, has been to help them understand her illness without fear.
“I barely could walk at one point, and I was missing very much living,” Dion previously said. “My kids started to notice. I was like, ‘OK, they already lost a parent. I don’t want them to be scared.’”
Despite the severity of her condition, which causes painful muscle spasms and difficulty walking and breathing, Dion continues to appear publicly, recently attending Paul McCartney’s Las Vegas concert.
