Famed for his wild expressions and physical comedy, Jim Carrey has hinted that he might be ready to don that iconic green face once again.
The actor, now 63, revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com that he’s open to reprising his role as Stanley Ipkiss from the 1994 blockbuster The Mask—but only if the concept truly sparks his imagination.
Why Jim Carrey’s condition could make or break ‘The Mask’ sequel
Carrey made it clear that he’s not motivated by money alone, emphasising that the idea itself is key. “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea,” he shared, adding, “If somebody had the right idea, I guess.” Fans of the original will recall how The Mask became a global sensation, raking in $351 million at the box office and catapulting Carrey’s comedic style to new heights. Now, with the actor’s condition set on creativity over cash, it remains to be seen whether Hollywood can deliver a pitch that meets his expectations.
Revisiting the iconic 1994 comedy classic ‘The Mask’
Released nearly three decades ago, The Mask told the story of mild-mannered banker Stanley Ipkiss, whose life turns upside down when he discovers a supernatural mask granting him cartoonish powers. Audiences fell in love with the film’s outrageous blend of slapstick humour and visual effects, while Carrey’s performance became one of his most recognisable roles. Even after all these years, the possibility of a sequel still excites long-time fans, though Carrey cautions he can’t be “definite” about anything until he sees a truly innovative script.
Will Jim Carrey Say ‘Yes’?
Although Carrey has joked in the past about his financial demands, he insists that any return to the The Mask must go beyond a simple pay cheque. “It’s not really about the money,” he noted. “As soon as a good idea comes your way… things tend to change.” With that open-ended tease, it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ll see Stanley Ipkiss back on screen. For now, fans can only hope that a writer or director will bring Carrey a fresh vision—one that’s compelling enough to make him slip on that magical mask again.
