Six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow will take on the role, following in the footsteps of Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Jude Law.

The 79-year-old actor revealed that the offer came as a surprise.
“I got the call while I was at the Sundance Film Festival,” he shared. “It wasn’t an easy decision because this will define the final chapter of my career. But I’m excited. Some great people are working on Harry Potter again. By the time we wrap, I’ll be about 87, but I said yes.”
The HBO series, described as a “faithful adaptation,” will feature a new cast and is expected to span seven seasons—one for each book unless any are split. The show is aiming for a late 2026 or early 2027 premiere.
Harry Potter Casting Calls
So far, no actors have been announced for the roles of Harry, Hermione, or Ron. Casting calls have reportedly gone out, suggesting the trio will likely be played by newcomers.
The series has sparked debate among fans. While many are protective of the original films, the biggest controversy surrounds J.K. Rowling’s involvement as an executive producer.
Despite the backlash, HBO is moving forward with the project, hoping to introduce a new generation to the Harry Potter world.
