Tom Holland has officially stepped into the world of ancient Greece, as filming for Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey is well underway.
The actor was seen on set for the first time this week in Methoni, Greece, where the Oscar-winning director is bringing Homer’s legendary tale to life.
Christopher Nolan’s epic vision for the Odyssey
Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, was dressed in a simple brown cloak and sported a clean-shaven look as he filmed scenes at Methoni Castle. He was surrounded by extras clad in authentic Greek-style armour—complete with feathered helmets, bronze breastplates, and spears—bringing the ancient world to life. Period-accurate ships were also spotted in the nearby harbour, setting the stage for what promises to be a visually stunning adaptation.
While his role hasn’t been officially confirmed, speculation is rife that Holland is playing Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Meanwhile, Matt Damon, whose look in full Trojan warrior attire was revealed last month, will take on the role of Odysseus himself. Anne Hathaway is expected to portray Penelope, Odysseus’ long-waiting wife, while Charlize Theron is rumoured to be playing Circe, the enchantress from the mythical epic.
The Odyssey : A Star-Studded Cast and a record-breaking budget
With a budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is set to be Christopher Nolan’s most expensive project yet. The film boasts a stellar cast, including Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, and Mia Goth. Adding even more intrigue, Zendaya, Holland’s fiancée, has also been cast in a mystery role.
Universal Pictures confirmed earlier this year that the film will be shot using cutting-edge IMAX technology, promising a groundbreaking cinematic experience. The studio revealed that the film will premiere globally on July 17, 2026.
