Greg James was so convinced that his invite to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding was an “elaborate trick” that he worried he flew from England to New York City “for nothing.”
The “BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show” host told listeners Wednesday that he received the invitation “in the form of a link … in the middle of the night” on March 12.
“I basically turned my phone straight off and thought, ‘I can’t deal with that now, it’s too mad,’” the 40-year-old recalled, noting that he “didn’t tell anyone [about the message] the whole week.”
Since “there was no paper invite to follow [and] it was all electronic,” James thought he might have been sent a “fake” as a prank.
“Until [my wife, Bella Mackie, and I] were in, we thought we may have made a big trip here for nothing,” the DJ admitted. “I wasn’t sure until we got there. … There was a huge part us that was … like, ‘This could not be real. This could be a scam.’”
Swift, 36, verbally invited James to her wedding during an October 2025 interview on the heels of her engagement.
When James joked about Kelce, also 36, doing “a wrestling move” on him, the pop star replied, “He’s going to do that as soon as he sees you at our wedding. That’s gonna happen.”
James then asked whether he was “coming,” to which Swift confirmed, “Obviously.”
More than 1,000 guests attended Swift and Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding on Friday.
Here’s the latest on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at MSG:
Ashish Ferguson gave the first look at the couple’s digital invitations in an Instagram post over the weekend, with the forest-themed painting featuring a custom double “T” monogram and a watermark with the guest’s name.
“You’re invited,” it read. “July 3rd, 2026 Manhattan. Love, Taylor & Travis. One night only. Early evening. Black tie.”
James, whose invitation ultimately ended up being legit, “had the best night maybe ever” at the star-studded ceremony.
He called the food “plentiful” and “amazing,” adding, “It wasn’t a sit-down dinner, I’ll say that. There were multiple cakes … loads of cakes.”
“I did speak to Taylor and I spoke to Travis, but look, on a wedding you know the bride and groom are very busy, so imagine that, but the bride and groom are Taylor and Travis,” James continued. “They were just having a great time. They both looked amazing. They were on the dance floor, it was great.”
While he shared more information via Instagram, quipping that he has “changed [his] mind about destination weddings,” the radio personality was wary of saying so much that the bride “never speaks to [him] again.”
James explained, “It was a wedding and there’s lots of nice family things that they did, so I don’t want to speak about all that stuff.”
