Taylor Swift is making MTV history once again.
The musician walked the VMAs 2026 red carpet Sunday wearing a black and silver Tamara Ralph couture gown ahead of receiving the first-ever Artist Director Honors, which “[recognizes] groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”
Swift made her solo directorial debut in 2020 with the music video for “The Man,” and has since directed “All Too Well: The Short Film” in addition to her music videos for “Cardigan,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite” — and, most recently, “Patient Zero,” which is set to premiere during tonight’s show.
The superstar’s look seemed to nod to her forthcoming video, as the black velvet bodice looks similar to the dress she wore in the 13-second teaser clip (albeit this one features sheer cut-outs and corset-like detailing down the back).
She accessorized with a pair of dazzling drop earrings and a diamond ring, which perfectly matched her glittering silver skirt.
Swift last attended the Video Music Awards in 2024, clad in a punky plaid Dior look complete with velvet hot pants, a zippered bustier and a dramatic, sweeping skirt.
This marks the songwriter’s first awards-show appearance since her wedding to Travis Kelce on July 3, and she’s heading into the night with a whopping 11 nominations — including Video of the Year, Best Pop, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects, all for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Swift’s also up for Best Direction for “Opalite,” Song of Summer for “I Knew It, I Knew You” and Artist of the Year.
And the 36-year-old pop icon doesn’t even to need to win in any of the above categories to become the most awarded artist in VMAs history; she and Beyoncé are currently tied for the title with 30 wins each, and Swift’s Artist Director Honors will bring her total to 31.
