Popular British music artist Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, who goes by the stage name Stormzy, has pleaded guilty to using his mobile phone in his car in West Kensington and will now face a nine-month ban from driving, as well as a £2010 fine.
Wimbledon magistrates court told reporters last Thursday after an official court hearing was concluded to determine the status of the case, that an undercover officer knocked on his tinted passenger window and told him to “get rid of your tints and get off your phone”. The ‘tinted’ car in question in which Stormzy was using a phone was his Rolls Royce Wraith, costing up to £350,000.
District judge Andrew Sweet, the man responsible for handing out stormzy’s penalty, has since commented on the rapper’s “dangerous and irresponsible” actions”. With Stormzy’s inability to attend the court hearing, as well as the already existent six points on his license, this is proving to be a major cause for concern for the artist.
Prosecutor Alice Holloway also said that stormzy broke an additional law on driver visibility whereby his Lamborghini Urus had its windows ‘tinted’ to only 4% light transmission, heavily surpassing the 70% requirement legal in the UK. She commented that this had “put vulnerable road users at risk.”
The public figure should aim to shine as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the younger generation of Britain, and throughout the rest of the world, where he is adored and highly respected for his musical talents. Stormzy is a prominent inspiration for many for his efforts aiming to stem inequality and injustice throughout Britain, however this incident has projected a negative influence onto the teenagers and new drivers who see stormzy as their idol.
First-time drivers throughout Britain should see this case as a stern warning to the consequences of their actions if they disrespect the laws and regulations enforced by the government to ensure dangerous and reckless road use is minimised, as yet another popular British star faces a driving ban.
