If you’re a fan of the food at Satay by the Bay, you may want to get one last taste of the dishes before it closes next month.
The open-air food court will be closing on Oct 1 to make way for a “refreshed waterfront dining experience” at the upcoming wetlands attraction, Gardens by the Bay announced on Facebook on Tuesday (Sept 1).
Wetlands by the Bay is the five-hectare expansion of the current Kingfisher Wetlands attraction, and will feature a new community space Glade Lawn as well as teamLab’s flagship museum that will offer a “multi-sensory pedal kayak experience”.
Work on the new attraction will begin in the first quarter of 2027, and it is slated to open by the end of 2028.
According to the National Library Board, the origins of Satay By the Bay can be traced back to the Satay Club, which is believed to have started in the late 1940s off Beach Road.
In 1971, the Satay Club opened at the Esplanade, with most stalls selling satay. Open from evening to early morning, the open air food court was popular with both Singaporeans and tourists.
The Satay Club had 28 stalls before its demolition in 1995.
Eight of these stallholders moved to the Clarke Quay Satay Club in 1995.
Satay by the Bay, the latest incarnation of Satay Club, opened at Gardens by the Bay in 2013, and has several push carts serving the namesake dish among other local fare.
