The mission? Gather 5,000 likes on a social media video. The prize? A fully paid trip on a Royal Caribbean cruise.
One repair services company in Singapore gave their workers that exact task.
The result? They blew it out of the water.
In an Instagram video posted on Monday (Sept 28), three of homegrown business Repair.sg’s workers can be seen dancing while calling upon netizens for aid.
“My boss says if this video gets 5,000 likes, he’ll bring us on a Royal Caribbean cruise,” said one of the men.
Instagram users were quick to respond. In under 24 hours, the reel has garnered over 18,000 likes, nearly 300,000 views and hundreds of comments.
Many commenters note that the video has reached its goal, and have already begun wishing them bon voyage.
“Boss better keep your words,” read one comment, while another said: “Can’t wait for the cruise vlog”.
‘Always been a close-knit team’
In response to AsiaOne’s queries, co-founder of Repair.sg Amos Chew confirms that the cruise holiday is indeed happening, set for November this year.
“Now that we have exceeded the target by more than three times, we have decided that we will be going on a Royal Caribbean cruise with our entire team of about 30 people,” said the 24-year-old, who is also chief operating officer of the company.
“This includes our local and foreign team of talented plumbers, electricians, air-con technicians and more.”
When asked about the idea behind the video, Amos said it happened spontaneously.
They were in the midst of moving offices when a team member showed him a similar video because he thought it was funny.
He then jokingly suggested attempting the same idea since they were on a short break.
Amos’ friend, who happened to be taking photos and videos of the moving process, then volunteered to direct the video.
“It was not at all challenging setting the whole thing up because we have always been a very close-knit team, even as we grew over the years,” he said.
“This was just another fun thing we were doing together!”
He added that the whole shoot was done in under 30 minutes.
As for why a Royal Caribbean cruise trip was chosen as the reward, Amos explained that they were looking for an experience that is “once in a lifetime” for the workers.
They were also aiming for “something different” since they had previously gone to Genting Highlands a few years ago.
They also brought the team to Universal Studios Singapore just last year.
“What better way to bond as a team than being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean?” he quipped. “Oh, and we heard the food is amazing too!”
