Olivia Munn shared a heartbreaking video on Wednesday from the day of her double mastectomy, as she paid tribute to the doctor she described as an ‘angel’ during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

The 45-year-old actress, who shares son Malcolm, four, and daughter Méi June, one, with husband John Mulaney, took to Instagram to post intimate footage ahead of the 2023 surgery, showing her being comforted by her OBGYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi.

In the emotional clip, Dr. Aliabadi offered words of encouragement as Munn fought back tears before breaking down and wiping her eyes behind her glasses.

The actress, who kept her breast cancer diagnosis private for months before publicly revealing it in March 2024, appeared overwhelmed with emotion as she prepared for the life-changing operation.

The touching video continued with Munn attempting to compose herself before sharing a lengthy embrace with Dr. Aliabadi.

Alongside the footage, she wrote: ‘Why it matters to have compassionate doctors.’

The 45-year-old actress, who shares son Malcolm, four, and daughter Méi June, one, with husband John Mulaney , took to Instagram to post intimate footage filmed from her hospital bed ahead of the 2023 surgery , showing her being comforted by her OBGYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi

She added, ‘My OBGYN @drthaisaliabadi does not perform double mastectomies, yet here she is on the day of mine comforting me on the way into surgery and staying the entire time watching over me. She cares for the wellbeing of her patients even when it’s after hours. She is an angel walking among us.

‘I don’t wish cancer on anyone, however, if you do find yourself in my same situation I hope you find a doctor like her.

‘One of my biggest pieces of advice when you are about to begin the biggest battle of your life is to find a team of doctors who listen to your needs, your fears and treat you like a person not just a patient.’

Munn’s health battle did not end with her double mastectomy.

In the months that followed, the actress,  underwent a series of additional procedures, including breast reconstruction surgery, a lymph node dissection and eventually a hysterectomy.

After enduring multiple operations as part of her treatment plan, Munn later revealed that she had achieved remission.

The star faced another emotional challenge in July 2025 when she disclosed that her mother, Kim, had been diagnosed with the same form of breast cancer.

Sharing the update on Instagram, Munn revealed that her mother had undergone her own double mastectomy and completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy.

For Munn herself, the ordeal began in 2023 with a shocking diagnosis – just three months after a mammogram had initially given her the all-clear.

She was also left stunned after having recently tested negative for a known breast cancer gene mutation.

‘I did all the tests that I knew about,’ she told People, adding that she was ‘walking around thinking I had no breast cancer’ shortly before receiving the diagnosis.

When she learned she had cancer in both breasts, Munn admitted she ‘was not someone who obsessed over death or was afraid of it in any way,’ but said that ‘having a little baby at home made everything much more terrifying.’

At the time, she was preparing for a film role, and reflected that ‘cancer doesn’t care who you are; it doesn’t care if you have a baby or if you don’t have time. It comes at you, and you have no choice but to face it head-on.’

Despite the fear surrounding her diagnosis, caring for her son Malcolm became a source of comfort during treatment.

‘When I’m with him, it’s the only time my brain doesn’t think about being sick. I’m just so happy with him,’ she explained.

She added, ‘And it puts a lot of stuff into perspective. Because if my body changes, I’m still his mom. If I have hot flashes, I’m still his mom. If I lose my hair, I’m still his mom. That’s really what matters the most to me. I get to be here for him.’

Munn and Mulaney married in 2024, after their relationship first became public in mid-2021, following Mulaney’s divorce from his first wife, Anna Marie Tendler.
