Nicolas Cage’s Malibu mansion has been damaged by a massive sinkhole.
The Spider-Noir actor bought the four-level oceanfront property for $10.5 million ($13 million) back in 2024 and he’s now facing a big bill after the driveway collapsed on Tuesday (Sept 8) amid coastal erosion.
Fire officials told ABC7 that crews were dispatched to the vacant property at around 5.45am following reports of a suspected gas main break, and it emerged that the erosion had washed away the ground beneath the driveway, breaking both a water and gas line.
The damage meant the Southern California Gas Company had to shut off the gas supply to the area and an evacuation order was later issued by officials for the surrounding properties.
A social media update from the City of Malibu read: “City of Malibu declares existence of local emergency following sinkhole from coastal erosion at Sea Level Drive, and issues evacuation order for affected properties.
“The Director of Emergency Services of the City of Malibu has declared the existence of a local emergency following a large sinkhole forming near 31630 Sea Level Drive.
“The proclamation was created in consultation with the LA County Fire Department and LA County Sheriff’s Department, citing public safety concerns as an expanding sinkhole restricts vital access for residents and emergency services. Authorities warn that these conditions are likely to worsen with forecasted high tides and rain caused by Hurricane Marie. A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued until 11pm on Sept 8, 2026.
“An evacuation order is in effect for all affected properties. Sheriff Deputies have notified residents in person, and a digital alert has been issued by the City through Everbridge.
“A temporary shelter is being established by the American Red Cross at Malibu High School for the affected properties (30215 Morning View Drive, Malibu, CA 90265).”
Authorities have warned that conditions could worsen in the area because of high tides and rain associated with Hurricane Marie.
At one time, Nicolas had a huge property portfolio including homes in Malibu, New Orleans and the Caribbean, along with castles in Germany and England, and he previously revealed he was inspired in his purchases by his “grail quest”.
He told the New York Times newspaper: “That was the time when I almost went on — you might call it a grail quest. I started following mythology, and I was finding properties that aligned with that. It was almost like National Treasure.
“One thing would lead to another. For me it was all about where was the grail? Was it here? Was it there? Is it at Glastonbury? Does it exist? That led to there being talk that people had come to Rhode Island, and they were looking for something as well.
“I don’t know if I’m going to say that’s why I bought the Rhode Island property. But I will say that is why I went to Rhode Island, and I happened to find the place beautiful. But yes, this had put me on a search around different areas, mostly in England, but also some places in the US. What I ultimately found is: What is the grail but earth itself?”
