Amar Prem was directed by popular director of that time Shakti Samantha starring Sharmila Tagore alongside Rajesh Khanna. Sharmila had just returned after giving birth to her first child Saif Ali Khan and Rajesh Khanna had emerged as a big star. The film was a remake of a Bengali movie Nishi Padma.

Shakti Samantha first approached Raaj Kumar for the role of Anand Babu but the actor demanded a huge sum of money as fees and therefore the filmmaker was unable to afford him. The budget of the film was also not huge.

Reportedly, as soon as, Rajesh Khanna came to know about the fact that director had approached someone else, he rushed to his office. The director asked Kaka about his dates and he immediately agreed for the film.

This was not the first time the duo was working together. Earlier, the director and the actor had given superhits like Aradhana in 1969, Kati Patang in 1970. Amar Prem’ went to be a blockbuster with dialogue like ‘Pushpa, I hate tear’s’ being a pop culture reference till date.

During the premiere of Amar Prem, the makers invited Raaj who probably held grudges. As per reports Raaj taunted Khanna saying, ‘ Mere feka hue tukkdhe khakar kutte bhi bulldog banjate hai.’ Everyone present was shocked including Kaka. He was left speechless with his statement.

Rajesh Khanna was an emerging star back then and Raaj had already established himself as a star but was popular in the industry for his attitude. Sometimes the actors used to fear to work with him just because of his arrogance, rude and unpredictable temper.
