Mathew Knowles is “evaluating all legal remedies” after a video went viral in which he appears to dismiss his ex wife’s work.
In a leaked interview clip published by Page Six on Monday, PIX 11 News anchor Kendis Gibson mention to Knowles the contributions that Tina Knowles made to the success of their daughter Beyonce’s band, Destiny’s Child — but Mathew flatly replies, “What work did she put in?”
The clip immediately went viral, with Sherri Shepherd discussing it on her daytime show, Loren Lorosa and her co-hosts Charlamagne tha God and DJ Envy dissecting it on “The Breakfast Club,” and 50 Cent laughing about it online.
Gibson interviewed Mathew on his “Kandid with Kendis” show, and at the end of their sit-down, Gibson told Mathew that he thought he and Tina “earned their flowers” with their tireless dedication to the “Say My Name” band.
“You guys put in the work,” he said.
“What work did she put in?” Mathew asked.
An astonished Gibson replied, “the hair.”
Knowles told us he was simply asking Gibson for clarity. “I don’t do interviews… I have conversations,” he said.
“I didn’t know what he meant by that. So, I’m saying, well, calmly, ‘What work did she put in?’ That was a question. I don’t know how it became a comment, but it was a question,” he said.
After Gibson mentioned Tina doing the band’s hair, Mathew added her role styling the girls.
“Tina did way more than just their hair… She did the styling, built the image for Destiny’s Child… that’s way more than just saying someone did the hair,” he told us.
The whole situation has left Mathew confused. “If someone diminished what Tina does and just say, she did the hair, and then I come back and say, no, she did the styling, isn’t that me giving flowers?” he said.
“I’m just so baffled by all of this,” he added. “You can’t even find a negative comment I’ve ever said about Tina. So, I don’t get it… People try to bait us all the time to be against each other. There was a complete misrepresentation here – and I’m evaluating all legal remedies at this time,” he said.
He insists that he and Tina “have a wonderful relationship,” so much so that he refuses to refer to her as his ex-wife. “That’s a negative term… I’ve never referred to Tina as my ex. I’m always positive. She’s my former wife, and I give her the respect of that rather than saying ex,” he said.
Mathew previously told us he ended the interview because Gibson arrived late, and he had other press to do. Despite the backlash that he’s received from the interview, Mathew told us he’s in Houston, “just grinding” and “having fun doing it.”
He’s been making the rounds promoting his Destiny’s Child: Iconic Reimagined Tribute concert, which is scheduled to take place in Nashville, TN, on March 27.
