On Monday, the 2017 assault case on a South Indian actress saw Malayalam actor Dileep and three others getting released from their charges. Meanwhile, the six other accused were found guilty.

On Monday, Malayalam actor Dileep was acquitted along with three others in the 2017 assault case on a South Indian actress. Six other accused were convicted. Immediately following the verdict, the Kerala government announced it would file an appeal against the decision. State Law Minister P. Rajeev stated that the current verdict did not provide complete justice to the victim, and therefore, the government would take further legal action. He stated that the government has always stood by the victim and will continue to do so.

Kerala to appeal against Dileep in 2017 assault case

According to PTI, Rajeev explained that the prosecution had taken a very firm stance in the case and submitted a detailed five-volume argument note to the court. The minister said he had spoken to the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police (DGP) to challenge the decision. He has instructed the prosecution to initiate further legal proceedings. According to him, although those directly involved in the crime have been found guilty, justice has not been served to everyone in the case, making it necessary to file an appeal.

In his words, “Though those who were directly involved in the crime were found guilty by the court, it was not the verdict everyone expected. “The state government has always stood strongly with the survivor, and that will be continued. The government has decided to go on appeal against the verdict. I have already spoken to the Chief Minister and the DGP regarding this matter. The prosecution has been directed to initiate further proceedings in this regard.”

Dileep’s acquittal in the 2017 case

The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court completely acquitted Dileep in this high-profile case, while six other accused were found guilty. These six, including the main accused, Sunil NS alias Pulsar Suni, were found guilty of committing the crime. Three other accused, along with Dileep, were also acquitted. The court delivered its verdict on November 25 after concluding a lengthy hearing.

The actress was attacked in 2017 when some men barged into her car and held her captive for nearly two hours. This incident shook the entire Kerala. A total of 10 people were tried in this case. These included Sunil, Martin Antony, Manikandan B., Vijayesh VP, Salim H., Pradeep, Charlie Thomas, actor Dileep (real name P. Gopalakrishnan), Sanil Kumar alias Mestri Sanil, and Sharath. Police arrested Dileep on July 10, 2017, after the investigating team received information that the main accused, Sunil, had sent him a letter from jail.

However, after the acquittal, the state government wants to challenge the court’s decision with a legal review of the entire case to ensure complete justice for the victim.
