John Mulaney was known to crack ‘inappropriate cancer jokes’ in order to cheer up his second wife Olivia Munn during her two-year battle against bilateral breast cancer.
‘We’ve made a lot of inappropriate cancer jokes that we could never tell publicly because it just lightened the mood,’ the cancer-free 45-year-old told CBS Sunday Morning.
‘It just made it not so scary. It really helped change my mind at times, you know? Sometimes when I was really scared, we’d talk about it and we’d really get into all of the fears and his fears and then there’d be like a lull and then he would make a joke. And it would just all feel not so scary at that time. He’s the best.’
Munn underwent five surgeries between 2023-2024 including a lymph node dissection, a double mastectomy, an ovariectomy and a partial hysterectomy.
‘There’s no better person in the world to me than my husband,’ the Your Friends & Neighbors actress gushed.

‘He wanted to come to every single doctor’s appointment….He’s just the most fun, nice person in the world.’
Munn recalled how the 43-year-old comedian would jot down notes about cancer and hormone therapy in the little notebook he normally reserves for joke ideas.
‘He was there,’ the half-Vietnamese beauty said.
‘And having the humor to go through it and having someone who’s so funny, it just lightens everything.’
Munn marveled about how she ‘never’ considered marriage and children until she met Mulaney at Seth Meyer’s 2013 wedding.
‘I feel that this was always going to be my life,’ the Daily Show alum said of destiny.
‘This is what is this is what life is made of. It’s all these tiny little moments. And once you are faced with the possibility of death and not being here, it’s for me all I wanted were the little moments. They’re the best.’
The married couple of 20 months are proud parents of three-year-old son Malcolm Hiệp, and they welcomed 18-month-old daughter Méi June via surrogate.
Munn is known to administer random drug tests to ensure Mulaney remains on the road to a successful recovery following his 2020 rehab stint for alcohol, cocaine and pills.
The Chicago-born funnyman was still married to ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler when he reconnected with the Hit-Monkey actress ‘at church in LA’ in February 2021.

It was the same time the 40-year-old multidisciplinary artist had checked herself into a psychiatric hospital for self-harm and depression, which she detailed in her 2024 memoir Men Have Called Her Crazy.
By May 2021, Mulaney had legally separated from Tendler after six years of marriage and he filed for divorce from her that July, which was finalized in January 2022.
