James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly Van Der Beek were each other’s biggest supporters before his death in February 2026.
The Dawson’s Creek alum met Kimberly in 2009, less than one year after finalizing his divorce from ex-wife Heather McComb.
Us Weekly confirmed in August 2010 that James and Kimberly tied the knot in a “small spiritual ceremony” in Tel Aviv — the same place they first met. The couple went on to welcome six children, with Kimberly experiencing multiple pregnancy losses while expanding their family.
In November 2024, James revealed that he was diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer. Kimberly stayed by his side until his death at age 48.
Two months before he died, James told the Today show that he “would not be alive” without Kimberly’s support. “She has just stepped up as a caretaker, as a nurse, as head of the household,” he said at the time. “And then the kids, as much as I want to shield them … you realize that resilience is not only something they have and can build, but is the best thing for them.”
