Lily Mo Sheen’s ‘nightmare’ is being accused of nepotism.

Such accusations are perhaps hard to avoid when her mother, Kate Beckinsale, is an age-defying Hollywood bombshell with box office hits like Pearl Harbor and the Underworld franchise to her name, and her father, Michael Sheen, has an impressive tally of awards and nominations for TV, film and theater – the Holy Trinity of acting.

And let’s not forget her grandparents, Judy Loe and Richard Beckinsale, for decades, two beloved regulars on British TV screens.

But, despite hailing from an acting dynasty and with parents believed to be worth upwards of $30 million, Lily, 27, wants to go it alone.

‘She loves her parents but she’s definitely leading an independent life and has for a long time,’ one source exclusively told the Daily Mail.

‘She doesn’t want to rely on her parents – at the same time, it’s undeniable that it would give her a leg up, so she just wants to really work hard and earn her career. She even takes acting classes.’

The 27-year-old is the only child of Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen

Lily was initially reluctant to follow in her parents’ footsteps, focusing more on writing than acting until she was 15, at which time she fully caught the bug after being cast in Shakespeare productions at her $52,500-a-year Harvard-Westlake Upper School. In 2017, she took herself off to New York University where she studied the Meisner technique and started to throw herself at auditions with vigor.

‘My parents would be happy with me doing anything,’ she told W magazine in 2022. ‘My mom used to always say, “Are you sure you don’t want to go to medical school?” My grandma was an actor, and my grandpa was an actor and my mom is an actress. That’s the world that I really understood. But all I want to do is work.’

And work she has, the way of non-famous aspiring actors – in hospitality.

Lily, who is signed to Independent Talent Group, whose roster boasts Simone Ashley, Gillian Anderson and Jodi Comer, has refused to rely solely on her parents’ money to fund her lifestyle, instead taking on regular nine to five jobs at contemporary art museums and local eateries throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

‘She’s worked at restaurants for many years and she’s proud of that,’ said our source. ‘So many actors do, but she’s happy to work. She just wants to work hard and earn her career. The parents are proud of her.’

When filming wrapped on her Hollywood film debut, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in 2019, Lily was back waiting tables at an Italian restaurant in the East Village.

Lily found parallels between her life and that of Addy, the character she played alongside Nicolas Cage. The Hollywood stalwart played a fictionalized version of himself as he struggles with juggling his career with family life. The gig was somewhat cathartic for Lily who knows all too well the pitfalls of having famous parents.

Sheen and Beckinsale, who were first tickled by fame in the early 1990s, met in 1995 on a touring production of The Seagull, which marked Beckinsale’s first professional stage appearance.

Beckinsale and Sheen dated from 1995 to 2003. The couple, who were never married, welcomed Lily in 1999 (pictured together in 2010)

When Lily was still young, Sheen had to move back to the UK as his work visa was not renewed. She was living in Los Angeles with her mother (the trio pictured together in NYC in 2016)

At the time, Sheen had a smattering of small-fry TV credits to his name, instead prioritizing treading the boards in the West End. Meanwhile, Beckinsale was slowly collecting TV and film roles, starring alongside Christian Bale in Prince of Jutland.

After their 1995 meeting, Beckinsale and Sheen began a whirlwind relationship, soon moving in together and welcoming Lily in 1999. However, they split in 2003, with Beckinsale moving on that same year with American director Len Wiseman, who she met on the set of Underworld.

With her parents split, Lily was forced to spend her time between Los Angeles, where she lived with her mother, and the UK where her Welsh-born father lived, desperately trying to sneak in quality time amid their hectic work schedules.

‘It can be difficult and relationships can really easily be frayed,’ she hinted during an interview with Los Angeles magazine in 2022.

Her father Sheen also acknowledged the difficulties, telling the Changes with Annie Macmanus podcast in 2020: ‘I had no work visa to stay in America, so every time I left, I had to go back to Britain. I never knew if I would be allowed to come back in again.’

But despite the logistics, Lily remains close to her parents.

‘When they’re not working you can tell that their goal was to come together and be with each other,’ a second insider told us. ‘She loves her parents and you can tell that she enjoys spending time with [them].’

But it hasn’t always been easy – in particular the last few years, which has seen the Beckinsale clan blighted by health issues and grief.

‘She’s worked at restaurants for many years and she’s proud of that,’ said our source. ‘So many actors do, but she’s happy to work. She just wants to work hard and earn her career’

Lily has landed a few acting roles throughout her life, making her Hollywood film debut in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, starring Nicolas Cage

Beckinsale’s stepfather, Roy Battersby, died in January 2024, followed by the death of her mother Loe to cancer in July 2025. The actress, who was herself hospitalized for weeks for a tear in her esophagus in summer 2024, had cared for her mother in the months leading up to her death.

Beckinsale’s erratic social media posts in the months that followed saw her scrutinized over her frail appearance, while other cryptic posts raised concern. She made sexual assault claims on Instagram and accused her former agent of allegedly firing her for expressing her political beliefs about the Gaza war.

When the online discourse seemingly becomes too much to handle, Beckinsale will go through periods in which she completely wipes her Instagram grid.

The capricious activity appears to be too much for Lily who no longer follows her mother on Instagram and Beckinsale doesn’t follow her back. Lily is still following Sheen.

Privately, Lily leaned on her boyfriend, David Schecter, for support, whom Beckinsale previously described as the ‘only bright spot’ for her and her daughter at the time.

After a November 2025 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! – during which she talked about Lily and her boyfriend – Beckinsale posted a sweet throwback photo of her and her daughter, writing: ‘Sorry for everything. I love you and always have more than anything in the wide world.’

One insider denied any talk of animosity, speculating that Beckinsale and her daughter simply want ‘their own space in their own world’ to post whatever they want.

‘Sometimes kids and parents get embarrassed [following each other] or who knows, but I think it’s more of that,’ they told the Daily Mail, insisting that they have a very ‘normal mom and daughter type of relationship.’

While filming Turnbuckle with her mom, they suffered a family tragedy when Beckinsale’s mom Judy Loe died from stage 4 cancer

They recently took a trip together and even shot for the same movie, action-dramedy Turnbuckle.

Although the first source said Lily and Beckinsale were never on set at the same time, a second insider said the matriarch ensured production took care of her daughter as she is ‘super protective.’

The latter source, who worked alongside Lily, told the Daily Mail that the young actress appears wise beyond her years, attributing it partially to how she grew up. Like Beckinsale, Lily has also decided to lead a clean and sober lifestyle for the last two years. She is said to be ‘doing well’ with it.

‘You can tell that she’s been in a universe that not many kids her age can relate to, and you can tell she’s focused, which means she’s paying attention to what she’s doing and she has a bright future. She’s a really great talent,’ the insider said.

Her most recent acting credits include a lead role in the independent feature Ice Cream directed by Liza Renzulli, a supporting part in Don’t Kill Loretta directed by Oliver Kienle and a role in Loser directed by Colleen McGuinness. She is also attached to multiple projects that have yet to be announced.

But as her career promises to cement her in the upper echelons of Hollywood, our insider warns it could rock her relationship with Beckinsale.

‘You can tell that Lily’s starting to get wings of her own and making choices,’ they said. ‘She is coming into her own and people are starting to understand who she is.

‘[Lily and Beckinsale] really do care for each other and want the best for each other, but you can tell both Kate and Lily are being pulled in their own direction in life.’

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sheen, Beckinsale and Lily for comment.
