Halle Berry has revealed that she was celibate for four years before meeting her partner, Van Hunt.

The actress, 59, has been divorced three times – from baseball player David Justice, singer-songwriter Eric Benét and French actor Olivier Martinez, with whom she shares a son, Maceo, 12.

She is also mother to a daughter, Nahla, 17, from her previous relationship with Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.

Following her last divorce in 2016, Halle decided to step back from relationships and spend time focusing on herself.

She told The Times: ‘I had to really sit myself down and be alone and grow and reflect and realise my value.

‘I had decided if the right person doesn’t come, I will be alone. And that’s OK.’

In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, she was introduced to musician Van.

The pair became friends through text messages and didn’t meet in person for six months, but when they finally did, the connection was immediate.

Reflecting on that journey, she added: ‘I had to go through fire and burn to get to the point of appreciating a person.’

It comes after Halle revealed during Jenna & Friends on the Today show last year that things are very serious with her boyfriend.

She shared that the musician has already proposed, saying he wanted her to be Mrs Halle Van Hunt.

However, the Oscar winner admitted she told him ‘not so fast’ when it came to the idea of marriage.

‘So I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,’ the musician said as Halle laughed. ‘It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.’

Halle revealed she has not yet moved forward with the idea because it’s complicated.

It has to do with her past divorces, it turns out. ‘Well, I’ve been married three times,’ said the red carpet stunner. ‘Van has been married once, and so no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t,’ Halle added.

‘But I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,’ Halle announced.

‘And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.’

And her friends are all for them tying the knot.

‘I think everybody’s been really happy, at least for me personally, people have been like, ‘You finally found… !’ I’ve always wanted what we have,’ she said.

Halle offered: ‘I always saw myself in a committed, loving relationship with like my best friend, someone that I respect and I love.’

Elsewhere, Halle said she has ‘never felt more seen’ as she opened up on the horror stories of the film industry whilst promoting her new hit with Chris Hemsworth.

The star has teamed up with Hollywood hunk Chris, 42, for new crime thriller Crime 101, along with Barry Keogh and Mark Ruffalo.

Appearing on the Graham Norton with Chris ahead of its release, Halle said she never felt ‘more seen’ working on the show.

Halle is the only woman of colour to have won an Oscar for Best Actress. She scooped the gong in 2002, beating Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek.

Describing her character, Halle said she found similarities with her alter ego, explaining to Irish host Graham, 62: ‘She stands up for all women in middle life. She has a voice. I think that has been a long time coming.

‘Many women who are down the path of life like I am will feel very happy to be seen.’

Speaking about the working environment on set of Crime 101, Halle said: ‘It was amazing. When you’ve being doing this for over 30 years and you say it is the all-time best, that’s something.

‘You hear about the horror stories that go on in the industry, but not at all here. I have never felt more seen, protected and stood up for as I did on this movie.’
