Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón has weighed in on the backlash surrounding Timothee Chalamet as he enters Oscars week.

Best Actor nominee Timothee appears to have fallen at the final hurdle, sparking fierce backlash over the past few days after declaring that ‘no one cares’ about ballet and opera.

Karla, who faced her own awards season controversey a year ago, responded to an Instagram meme posted by her manager Sandro Rubini, showing Timothee’s ‘Marty Supreme’ character calling the actress for advice.

‘Hola Karla, do you think they gonna make me pass the red carpet at the Oscars’ the meme read.

‘Are you a trans woman? Then don’t worry about it, Tim,’ Karla bluntly wrote in response. ‘Besides, I love ballet slippers and I’ve seen ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ ten times. Not sure if that counts for anything. Best of luck with the awards.’

She added: ‘Even though no one has seen or heard me say anything, while they have both seen and heard you, people still seem to prefer believing whatever the bad guys claim I said.’

Karla became the first trans woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar and was heavily favored to win the award, until racist tweets she made years earlier plunged her into controversy.

Unearthed by journalist Sarah Hagi, the posts made by Karla in 2020 and 2021 spewed anti-Islam and racist rhetoric.

As a result of the subsequent backlash, the actress opted not to attend the BAFTA, SAG and Goya Awards but did go to the Oscars, after skipping the red carpet. She lost out on the Best Actress Oscar to Mikey Madison.

The actress apologised for for the posts but had insisted she is not a racist.

‘As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,’ she said in a statement via Netflix.

‘All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.’

She added in an interview with CNN: ‘I have been judged, condemned, sacrificed, crucified, and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself.’

Timothee meanwhile has faced a barrage of backlash after making his controversial remarks during an hour-long Variety/CNN Town Hall with his Interstellar ‘father’ Matthew McConaughey on February 24.

‘I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera. Things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,” the actor said smiling.

Realising his mistake, he attempted to recover: ‘All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there… I just lost 14 cents in viewership. Damn, I just took shots for no reason.’

Gold Derby is now predicting that Michael B Jordan, who won the SAG award in a surprise triumph, has a 48.28 percent chance of winning the best actor Oscar for taking on the role of twin brothers while Timothee has slipped to 36.99 percent.

However, many of the 11,000 registered Academy members probably cast their ballot before voting officially closed last Thursday at 5pm PT, so it’s unclear if his chances will be affected.

Timothee is nominated for two Oscars- best picture and best actor – for his part producing and starring in Marty Supreme at the 98th Academy Awards, which take place on Sunday.

He was previously considered the frontrunner after winning best actor at the Critics’ Choice Awards on January 4 and the Golden Globe Awards on January 11.
