Elizabeth Taylor’s estate is “deeply moved” by Taylor Swift’s “extraordinary” new music video paying homage to the late movie star.
“What makes this piece so remarkable is its pure devotion to Elizabeth’s legacy: composed entirely of archival film clips, from her iconic screen performances to candid moments, it is a celebration of Elizabeth from beginning to end, and an homage in the truest sense,” a rep for Taylor’s estate told TMZ on Tuesday.
The rep added that the “Cleopatra” star’s estate is “delighted by this celebration” and the “care with which Taylor Swift has spotlighted what so many have long understood: Elizabeth Taylor was a true icon, a trailblazer in every sense of the word.”
“She lived unapologetically and on her own terms, embracing her public life with grace and courage while fiercely protecting the private world she cherished with family and friends,” Taylor’s estate continued. “That balance, that duality, was one of her most remarkable qualities.”
The rep concluded the touching statement by celebrating Swift and her decision to honor the late Hollywood legend the way she did.
“If there is anyone navigating the extraordinary pressures of global fame with comparable authenticity and strength, it is Taylor Swift,” they shared. “The estate is honored that she chose to pay tribute in this way, and have no doubt that Elizabeth would have loved every frame of it.”
Taylor died from congestive heart failure in Los Angeles in March 2011. She was 79.
Before her passing, the big screen icon and trendsetting entrepreneur wowed audiences with her Oscar-winning roles in “BUtterfield 8” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”
Swift, 36, celebrated Taylor’s legacy and International Women’s Month on Tuesday with a surprise music video for her “Life of a Showgirl” track “Elizabeth Taylor.”
The music video was assembled using hours of footage of the late screen goddess, including clips from Taylor’s films “A Place in the Sun,” “Cleopatra,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Father of the Bride.”
Of course, the “Fate of Ophelia” hitmaker also included nods to Taylor’s iconic style, including the 33-carat Krupp Diamond ring she received from ex-hubby Richard Burton.
Swift opened up about her “Elizabeth Taylor” track and how she approached the late actress’s estate about the song during an appearance on the BBC Radio 2 show following the release of “The Life of a Showgirl” last October.
“People like Elizabeth Taylor, we go to her estate and let them know,” she explained at the time. “And they were lovely about it.”
Taylor’s descendants couldn’t have been happier to hear Swift singing about their larger-than-life matriarch.
“My family loves the song, and grandma would have loved it, too — I wish she could have heard it,” Quinn Tivey, Taylor’s grandson, told Town & Country in October.
He added, “Taylor Swift not only made a beautiful homage to Elizabeth Taylor, but it feels like she is addressing her directly while invoking her legacy in a way that is dimensional, confessional, honest, and fun.”
