Edmund Chen recently returned to social media after his driving accident, but some netizens are unhappy about it.
The 65-year-old local former actor posted a reel yesterday (Aug 10), where he celebrated National Day with his actress wife Xiang Yun at an apartment, together with friends including actress Pan Lingling and her husband Huang Shinan.
From their flat, they were able to see the flag flypast and fireworks at the National Stadium, where the parade was held this year.
He wrote: “Celebrating Singapore’s 61st National Day. Wishing our nation peace and prosperity and everyone good health, happiness, and blessings always.”
A netizen commented in Edmund’s Instagram post: “Disgraceful to have you in Singapore”.
Edmund replied he would be sharing footage of the accident and hoped that his experience would be a reminder for everyone to stay alert and safe on the road.
He subsequently posted the rear dashcam footage of the traffic accident. The video appears to be visible to only some users.
Edmund also posted the same celebratory video on his Facebook account and another netizen commented: “Still celebrating National Day? A coward who doesn’t even dare to serve his prison sentence.”
He replied to the comment today: “Dear friends, I believe your concerns come from a place of kindness. Now that things have settled, I hope my experience can serve as a reminder for all of us to stay alert and safe on the road. Wishing everyone peace and safety.”
Some netizens believed to have seen the dashcam footage felt he was “not at fault”.

However, others posted derogatory comments, including one who called him “thick-skinned”.

Edmund served a one-day prison sentence on July 20 after a partially successful appeal at the High Court on the same day.
On March 4, 2025, Edmund was driving along Ayer Rajah Expressway towards Central Expressway when he slowed down unnecessarily, almost coming to a stop, before making an abrupt lane change to his right.
He was accused of not keeping a proper lookout on this right, resulting in a collision with a motorcycle overtaking his car. The 21-year-old motorcyclist suffered multiple injuries, including a wrist fracture which required surgery and 99 days of hospitalisation leave.
Edmund was sentenced to five days in jail and a five-year driving ban over careless driving at the State Courts, which he appealed against a few days later. He was granted a suspension while pending the outcome of his appeal with his bail raised from $10,000 to $15,000.
While Edmund’s lawyer requested a $5,000 fine to replace the jail term during his appeal session on July 20, Justice Hri Kumar ultimately cut his prison sentence to one day, which he served on the same day and was released that evening. His driving ban still stands.
