Channel 4 series Go Back to Where You Came From showed six Britons exploring war-torn countries in the Middle East and Africa to learn about what drives migrants to our shores.
One of the most vocal participants was ‘humanitarian’ podcaster Mathilda Mallinson, who was seen lecturing Yorkshire lorry driver Nathan Rimmington about his ‘privilege’ when he voiced anti-immigration views.
‘We’re born with privileges,’ she admonished him while they were in Somalia. ‘For example, you’re born with citizenship and you are straight, male and white.’
However, what viewers were not aware of was Mathilda’s own privilege.
I can disclose that the Cambridge graduate is, in fact, an heiress and direct descendant of the baronet Sir William Mallinson.
Her kinsman is Sir James Mallinson, who ‘fell in’ with a group of Hindu monks on a trip to India and is thought to be the only baronet to have worn dreadlocks. Her father Lawrence founded an organic soft drinks business, James White Drinks, of which Mathilda, 29, and her siblings Phoebe and Barnaby are listed as co-directors. It was awarded a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth which was renewed by King Charles.

She tells followers online of her participation in the documentary: ‘Six weeks before my wedding, I disappeared for a month – I was part of a journey to understand the real refugee crisis, guided by people living it. I’m really proud to have been part of something that gets their voices heard.’
Four of the participants were broadly against immigration, while two, Mathilda and former Apprentice star Bushra Shaikh, were in favour.
Mathilda tells me: ‘We talked about my privilege often and openly – the show is a four-hour edit of a four-week shoot.
‘My point is “life’s a raffle” and we shouldn’t focus our anger on people who have a tough draw.’
