Dancing With The Stars alum Sharna Burgess laid bare her past struggles with ‘binging and restricting’ as she described her history with eating disorders.
In a candid post, the 40-year-old shared with her Instagram followers that she had a ‘complicated relationship’ with food until she entered her 30s.
The revelation came in a Q&A Burgess held on her Instagram account on Sunday, where she was asked if she had ever ‘struggled with eating disorders.’
‘I struggled with binging and restricting mostly,’ she wrote. ‘I had a super complicated relationship with food as a teen and my 20s. In my 30s that changed though.’
The Australian dancer previously said her body image struggles began as a result of her dancing.
In 2021 she told Good Health & Wellbeing that dancing gave her with a ‘negative body image.’
DWTS alum Sharna Burgess has bravely revealed her past struggles with binging and restricting
The revelation was made during a Q&A she held with Instagram followers
‘I had a real struggle with my body because of dance,’ she said.
‘I remember being 15 and put on the scale every two days by my teachers and we were told whether we needed to lose weight or not. Every week I was told that I needed to lose more weight – and I certainly wasn’t overweight,’ she said.
It wasn’t until she joined Dancing With The Stars in 2011 that her outlook changed.
Watching celebrities learn to love their own bodies challenged her insecurities.
‘It was seeing just how much the celebrities on the show transformed and ended up loving their bodies through being able to move and dance that really shook my perspective,’ she said.
‘I started to see something else in the mirror, I started to see a body that had gotten me through some incredibly difficult times, that had created some beautiful moments, that had won championships, that had landed me a life I never ever thought possible.
‘When we get a negative body image as a child, it can take us a very long time to shake it and to see ourselves differently. For me, however, that was my first turning point.’
Burgess is no longer on Dancing With The Stars but is open to returning.
The topic came up on her latest Q&A, when a fan asked if she would consider returning to the series.
Burgess previously said dancing ‘instilled’ her with a negative body image, which changed once she joined DWTS
Burgess said watching celebrities positively react to their own transformed bodies sparked her new outlook
‘Always,’ she replied. ‘It’s never a no. I was supposed to do something with them last season but I was already working on a play in NYC and couldn’t commit. I love them, the show and am always going to want to be there.’
Burgess was even partnered with her now fiance, Beverly Hills 90210 star Brian Austin Green, during her time on the show.
In July the ballroom dancer told Stellar magazine, the pair met after a mutual business manager arranged a blind date between them in 2020.
Burgess admitted she didn’t recognize Brian’s name as she hadn’t watched 90210.

The following year, the duo starred on the US version of Dancing With The Stars as a couple.
‘We totally put our relationship first the whole way through, because it was always more important to us,’ she explained.
Burgess and Green have been together since 2020 and delight in their blended family.
The American actor is a father of five. He shares Kassius, 23, with ex-wife Vanessa Marcil, 56, and Noah, 13, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, nine, with Megan Fox.
Green also welcomed his son Zane with Sharna in June 2022 and the actress said their baby boy ‘bonded everyone together’.
‘I was always incredibly close with the kids as our relationship grew, but when Zane came along, it was like that piece locked in where they were, like, ‘Oh, this is forever’,’ she revealed.
