Dax Shepard has shared his reaction to Cher telling him on his podcast that his wife Kristen Bell deserves someone better than him.

The 51-year-old actor has been married to Bell since 2013, and they have welcomed two daughters into the world together – Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 11.

Cher has longstanding ties with Bell, as both women acted in the 2010 film Burlesque, which also starred Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci and Julianne Hough.

Last week the 79-year-old musical icon went on Shepard’s show Armchair Expert, where they were joined by Bell, 45, in a guest appearance.

When the subject of Bell’s marriage came up, Cher, who herself has been divorced twice, told Shepard: ‘You’re lucky. She’s definitely the better half.’

Shepard was asked about the exchange while walking the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday, and offered his take on the viral moment.

‘I think we both expected that,’ Shepard said of Cher’s remarks, speaking to Access Hollywood. ‘That’s why you love Cher, which couldn’t be greater.’

His co-host Monica Padman added: ‘There was a couple big headlines but people need to go listen to the whole thing, ’cause everything she says is perfect.’

Shepard laughed in agreement and doubled down on his assurance that he took Cher’s jibe good-naturedly: ‘No, we thought it was hysterical.’

When Cher took her swipe at him on the podcast, Shepard asked her to recommend another man for Bell, saying: ‘Who would be your dream partner for her? ‘Cause I know you think she could do better, and I don’t disagree.’

Cher failed to come up with a name on the spur of the moment, but slyly told Shepard: ‘The truth is, I trust her. So you must have something that I don’t see.’

The back-and-forth came months after Shepard and Bell came in for a deluge of backlash over her post celebrating their anniversary.

‘Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would,”‘ Bell wrote with a heart emoji.

Commenters flew into a frenzy of outrage, slating Bell for the ‘offensive’ and ‘insensitive’ joke and noting it was Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

‘How can any self respecting woman stay with a man who “jokes” like that?’ one Instagram user demanded. ‘I’m not even a very serious person, but that would have me leaving so fast your head would spin.’

Shepard attended Sunday’s Golden Globes because the awards show was offering a prize for best podcast for the first time ever and Armchair Expert was nominated.

However the Idiocracy actor found himself bested by his fellow celebrity podcaster Amy Poehler, who took home the trophy for her show Good Hang.

After his defeat, he fired up his Instagram to show the text conversation he had that night with one of his and Bell’s two daughters.

‘You look so handsome dada,’ wrote one of his little girls before the show started, adding: ‘Your suit is stunning’ – to a heartwarming reply from Shepard.

‘You, know, the ONLY reason I’m sad I didn’t win is because I wanted to stand on that stage and tell the whole world how much I love you and your sister,’ he wrote.

His message was accompanied by a string of heart emoji, and when he posted the texts to Instagram, he added the caption: ‘I won tonight. And every night.’

Shepard attended the Golden Globes on the arm of his wife, who was also nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series for Nobody Wants This, but lost out in the end to Hacks star Jean Smart, earning the gong for the third year in a row.

Smart gave a cheeky nod to her multiple wins in her acceptance speech, joking onstage: ‘What can I say? I’m a greedy b****.’
