One of Singapore’s oldest surviving coffeeshops will shutter for good at the end of September, bringing an almost six-decade run to a close.

Canteen 398, more fondly known as Boh Geh Uncle Canteen, announced the news in a notice placed at the establishment, which has since been shared on social media.

According to the notice, its last day of operations will be on Sept 18 and the coffeeshop will be permanently closed from Sept 19 after 57 years running.

“Thank you for all your support all these years,” read the notice.

While no reason for the closure was shared in the notice, the owners told an Instagram user that they plan to take a break and retire.

Located at 398 Piccadilly, the establishment opened in 1969 and was once part of the nearby Seletar Camp, the French Embassy in Singapore shared in a post on May 7.

It originally served as a corporal’s mess for the British army during the colonial era.

The establishment has retained its rustic, old-school style the past few decades, with open-air seating and canteen-style tables and chairs.

Three stalls operate at the canteen, offering drinks and dishes including economic rice, ayam penyet, mee hoon goreng, lontong and sambal goreng. Prices range from $1 to $5.
