Hong Kong star Andy Lau has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).

He received the degree in a conferment ceremony yesterday (Aug 10).

HKBU’s president Alexander Wai praised the singer-actor and said: “In this era of uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence, one thing seems certain – AI can never ‘become’ Dr Lau, for it cannot replace his humanity, his talent, or the emotional bonds he has woven with the Chinese community through art.”

Wai also described Andy as someone who is “humble and dedicated to giving back to society”.

“Through various charitable channels and the foundation he established, he nurtures young people and supports disadvantaged groups, constantly inspiring those in need and illuminating their path,” said Wai.

Andy, who turns 65 in September, also received an honorary Doctor of Literature from Hong Kong Shue Yan University in 2017.

He was named one of Hong Kong’s four heavenly kings in the ’90s together with Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai

In 1994, he started the Andy Lau Charity Foundation, which helps people in need and promotes youth education services.

He married his Malaysian wife Carol Chu in 2008 and they have a 14-year-old daughter Hanna.
