When it was announced that Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali are coming together for a movie, fans couldn’t keep calm. It was a collaboration—something cinephiles dreamt of for years. Considering the kind of talents coming together, the expectations were quite high. In 2017, their movie Jab Harry Met Sejal was released in theatres. It also starred Anushka Sharma in the lead roles.

As mentioned, fans had a lot of expectations from Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali’s movie. However, when Jab Harry Met Sejal was released, it didn’t get a lot of positive reviews. The film even failed to earn decent numbers at the box office. Back then, several entertainment news reports mentioned that SRK allegedly interfered with or took charge of the movie. So is it true? Imtiaz has now answered the question.
While talking to GQ India, the Rockstar director was asked if Shah Rukh imposed himself on JHMS. To this, Ali clarified that the rumours that he took charge of the movie were not true. SRK never imposed himself on the film. Imtiaz stated that SRK is a huge star with a massive fan base and has a lot of expectations to fulfil. The director stated that he didn’t write the story to serve that expectation. He didn’t consider the scale of Khan’s stardom.
Further, Imtiaz Ali added, “There are some boxes you have to check within your script to make it work, as many as you can, without ruining the soul of the film. With JHMS, we needed to be more clear about what he is longing for. It needed some more exposition, perhaps some flashbacks, and a more traditional structure to work.”
Meanwhile, even though the movie wasn’t loved by all, the music received lots of love. Pritam had composed the song for SRK and Anushka Sharma’s movie. Furthermore, this year, Imtiaz received immense praise for his Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila, which stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
